A property tax limit could cost our communities millions
Local governments across North Carolina — from the mountains to the coast — face growing costs from inflation, changing needs, lagging infrastructure, and state and federal policy decisions that have pushed costs to their communities.
In November, voters will see a proposed change to the constitution on the ballot that could limit the ability of local governments to make budget decisions based on their communities’ priorities. The proposed property tax amendment gives vague directions, but clear power, to state legislators to limit the primary source of revenue local governments can rely on to meet rising costs, without guaranteeing anyone a lower property tax bill.

Imagine if our communities had to go without these public services that educate our children, provide opportunities to learn and connect, support people to get to work and school, and spend at businesses in their local communities.
