Shutdown ends, but the health care crisis and funding barriers continue. Read more
Federal decisions about what to fund — and how to pay for it — have a direct impact on the well-being of North Carolinians, our communities, and future generations.
Each year, federal funding to North Carolina is roughly equal to the entire state budget.
It’s a critical resource for achieving our shared goals of a state where everyone has the freedom to thrive – from ensuring access to health care and food, to building affordable housing and recovering from climate disasters.
We dig into the ways that federal funding proposals shape daily life in North Carolina, determining whether people can meet basic needs and whether communities have what they need to thrive.
Federal Budget & Tax Policies Matter
Federal decisions about where to spend our money matter to whether North Carolinians will have access to health insurance, food assistance, child care, and housing, among other basic needs.
Whether those programs and services will be funded adequately and equitably — with contributions from the wealthy and profitable corporations — matters directly to North Carolinians through the federal and state tax code and indirectly by the programs and services those funds support.
Federal funding decisions since early 2025 by the executive branch have been chaotic, creating uncertainty about many vital programs in our state. Meanwhile, Congressional budget proposals are contemplating deep cuts to health insurance and food assistance to finance tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.
As federal funding proposals move forward, decisions about whether and how to fund programs and services typically covered by the federal government could lead to cost shifts to the state — resulting in cuts to services and programs that would harm North Carolinians.
