Statement on budget deal from Alexandra Sirota, Executive Director of the NC Budget & Tax Center

North Carolinians need leaders who understand the real pressures families and communities are facing and who are willing to adapt when the facts demand it. Instead, this budget deal, hatched behind closed doors, reflects an increasingly rigid ideology and a pattern of intentional neglect — underfunding public needs, giving tax breaks to the wealthy while advancing constitutional changes that would lock future generations into fewer choices and fewer tools to solve problems and strengthen our state.

We have choices right now.

North Carolina can pursue a well-being budget that invests in the things people and our economy need to thrive — strong schools, affordable health care, child care, housing, and resilient communities — instead of hamstringing our state into policies that limit our future.
